New Study Released on LGBT Community

The Gallop Research Group published a study today that concludes that 3.4% of Americans identify as LGBT. This study comes at the height of Queer History Month as a research team interviewed 120,000 Americans about their sexual orientation. This poll is so significant because of the lack of research that we have on the LGBT community.

"The study offers an unprecedented resource for informing LGBT-related debates like those regarding marriage, parenting and workplace discrimination with much-needed facts rather than stereotype or anecdote," said Gary Gates, a scholar with the UCLA School of Law's Williams Institute, which researches sexual orientation and gender identity issues.
The cultural demographics of this poll was also discovered: 4.6% of African-Americans, 4% of Latinos, 4.3% of Asian-Americans, and 3.2% white Americans identify as LGBT.
Something that I personally found interesting that came from this study was the partisan lines drawn. 44% LGBT folks identify as Democrats, 13% with Republicans, and 13% with Independents. As for the upcoming election, the Gallop poll had some insight on the two candidates and concluded that, "Given the strong Democratic tilt of the LGBT population, it is not surprising that registered voter preferences of LGBT Americans tilt strongly - but not monolithically - toward Barack Obama," the  survey said. "Specifically, 71% of LGBT Americans who are registered voters support Obama, while 22% support Mitt Romney."
