FDA Reviews a Drug to Prevent HIV

Since the beginning of the campaign against HIV and AIDS, medicine has made strides to extend the life span of a person diagnosed with AIDS. Now, the FDA has reviewed a drug that they believe can prevent a person from contracting HIV. The drug, Truvada, would be available to people who are high risk. This drug could possibly save many lives. Currently, there are approximately 1.2 million Americans with HIV, but with Truvada, this number could diminish.

However, not all of the FDA panel supported the drug. Truvada would have to be taken everyday to effectively prevent HIV, and the price is as lofty as $900 a month. The FDA argues that this price puts people without health insurance at an extreme disadvantage.

Here's hoping that after more research, that price goes down, and we can see a future that is HIV free.

    Hi,

I hope this finds you well. Healthline just released an informative article with graphics regarding HIV/AIDs facts in the US and around the World. The page details who is being effected and the cost of treatment. You can check out the resource here: http://www.healthline.com/health/hiv-aids/facts-statistics-infographic

This valuable, med-reviewed information shows the need to continueeducating people on prevention and how to protect yourself and your loved ones. I thought this would be a great resource for your audience, and I am writing to ask if you would include it as a source of information on your page: http://rcnjwc.blogspot.com/2012/05/fda-reviews-drug-to-prevent-hiv.html

Please let me know if this would be possible. I’m happy to answer any other questions as well.

    Warm regards,
